"My purpose is to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, that's why I try to make learning a fun and pleasant experience." - Karen, Owner of TES

Hi! I'm Karen!

Hello!!! My name is Karen Taylor. I am married with two children. When I am not teaching or tutoring I enjoy spending time with my family and vacationing. I have been a teacher for over 20 years. My passion for teaching can be traced back to my relocation to the Petersburg, VA tri-city area in 1993. I began substituting in my daughter’s school. The principal saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. From there my new career began it’s new path.

Are you looking for a company to help enhance and strengthen the academic skills of your child? My purpose is to benefit the students I work with as much as possible, thats why I try to make learning a fun and pleasant experience.

I graduated from Virginia State University, in Petersburg, VA with a degree in Business Administration. I also decided to complete my Masters in Education through Liberty University, in Lynchburg, VA. I have trained and became an Assistant Director of a private school, Olivet Christian Academy, located in Petersburg, VA.

Learn more about Karen's professional background, certifications, and more!

Karen has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University. She studied Early Childhood Education at John Tyler Community College-Chester and also holds a Masters in Education from Liberty University. She has taught every grade on an elementary level from Preschool to Fifth Grade.

Karen's daughter was beginning Kindergarten and she had just been laid off from work as an HR manager. She decided she would substitute at her daughters' school to keep herself busy.

Within a week, she realized she was asked to come in to substitute for other teachers. She was asked so often that she had to turn down teachers. She found out that the word had gotten around that she was a no-nonsense kind of teacher who was a bit stern and didn’t have problems with children during the day. The teachers were confident that their children would be safe and would also get their lessons done with her in the room. You see, she's what they call a Navy brat. Her father had the same type of personality. She just likes to live life to the fullest and have fun and love too!

She began substituting at Walnut Hill Elementary in September of 2000. She was asked if teaching would be something she would be interested in and from there she worked on getting her license. She received a provisional license in September of 2001 and have always taught since then.

Karen left the public schools in 2004. Her church opened a private school, Olivet Christian Academy.  She was asked to work under the Executive Director and later became the Ass’t Director of the Academy. Before the Academy closed she was the acting Director.

While finishing her work on her Master's Degree in Elementary Education, She went to Southside Elementary School to complete her practicum. After a month of being at the school, she was asked to become a Kindergarten teacher. She has been employed at Southside Elementary since September of 2012.
